2025 Summer Our workshop, presented at DiGRA in Malta, Gendered Narratives in Japanese Gaming: Power, Play, and Cultural Imagination brought together over 20 participants to examine how gender shapes character design, narrative, and play in Japanese video games. Through presentations on topics like boyhood in 1980s gaming, monstrous femininity in otome games, and the girl detective in mystery narratives, participants engaged in lively discussions and creative activities. The session culminated in the design of original game characters and trading cards that critically reflected on gendered tropes in gaming culture.
2023 Fall Students enrolled in Modern Japanese Media—a course that explored various Japanese media adaptations of Sherlock Holmes— at the University at Buffalo, SUNY, wrote reviews for The Shoso-in Bulletin, a rare collection of international Sherlockian magazines published by The Men with the Twisted Konjo, published from 1991 to 2004. Yuichi Hirayama from Japan’s Sherlock Holmes Club and George Vanderburgh from Battered Silicon Dispatch Press generously provided our class with digital copies of volumes 1- 13 of The Shoso-in Bulletin. Here, you will find selected reviews of articles in the hope of disseminating knowledge and awareness of the influence of Sherlock Holmes in Japan and abroad.
